Sijia Chen is a multimedia artist recognized for her large-scale sculptures and site-specific installations. Her work explores themes of cultural identity, collective memory, and the impact of human movement, while consistently emphasizing form, scale, and the interplay of light and shadow.
At the core of Chen’s practice is papercut, a traditional art form she learned from her father and has reimagined in a contemporary context. She extends this language into both her large-scale collages and public artworks, where layered patterns and intricate cutouts become a way to record shared experiences and collective memory. By combining the intimacy of hand-cut paper with the permanence of architectural materials, Chen creates works that translate personal stories into civic landmarks—pieces that connect communities and give visual form to their identity.
Chen’s projects have been commissioned and permanently installed in public spaces around the world, including airports, civic centers, and city plazas. Her work is also represented in the collections of major institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Inside-Out Art Museum, and the Guangdong Art Museum.
